Cruised gently up to Hartshill Yard a few miles further north and moored up. Here in the past, mountains of roadstone were quarried and shipped down the canal to London and the expanding cities of southern Britain. Even the Romans had quarried here and made connector roads to the new Watling Street so as to make transport easier. The quartzite waste hills are new pyramids in the landscape. It is reckoned that the local town of Mancetter, visible to the North East, was the site of the last battle of the Romans with Boudicca?s army in AD 60. We climbed the hill into the village of Hartshill, where you can see for over 25 miles Eastwards over Watling Street and into the misty distance of the Leicester outskirts.   We met a local character who lives in a sweet, tiny cottage sitting atop Bridge 31.  He had come by walking his dog and we got chatting and he mentioned that he played banjo. After the hill walk, we called in to see him and were invited down to his cellar overlooking the canal wharf. He has all sorts of musical stuff in there along with a great selection of top class cycles; evidently he was a time-trialer up to the age of 50 ? now he is 62, still uses them, but more for fun and trying to keep fit as he has had a heart attack in the recent past and also has emphysema.   He played a bit of banjo for us and pulled out various guitars and enough ?projects? to keep him going a while.   He has Irish ancestry through his father but with a white Russian grandparent! His usable full name is delightful: Cyril Percy Troth. The Percy is short for Percival and the Troth was originally Trothvoskey! He?s known to everyone around here as ?Percy.?  Lovely man and a great character.  Check out the photos in our gallery.   Weather is really quite nice so far, warm and quiet, no wind and dry! The guy making our cratchboard, Dave Bassett, came over to meet us this afternoon and fitted the cratch board, complete with glass pane, and also moved our tunnel light to the front of the board.  He?s done a great job, it looks brilliant, however itt looks like the canopy could be delayed until Thursday or so, which is a pain but if so, we?ll mosey on a bit further ? they?ll just have to find us?   So we are staying put at bridge 31 for the night as it is peaceful and pleasant here, you never know we might get to jam with Percy tonight!
