Normal 0 false false false /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} Tuesday - We decided not to rush, so we had a leisurely breakfast after a bit of a lie in and then late morning we got togged up in several layers of clothing ready for tackling the Atherstone Flight!  We didn�t actually set off until just before 12.00 � lazy devils aren�t we!!   A few boats had actually come past us in both directions whilst we were moored so we weren�t sure which way the locks would be set � it turned out they were against us initially so they had to be emptied first before the gates could be opened to let the boat in.  This of course adds to the time each lock takes.  However we made it up to top lock in reasonable time, moored up and went into Atherstone to do a bit of shopping.  We had been shopping in Atherstone before, on our way up North, so we knew where to find the supermarkets.  We also remembered going into a little shop on the high street that sold absolutely everything, including plastic foot  stools.  When we are cruising for several hours Clive gets quite stiff because he can�t really change his position.  He has to have one arm on the tiller and one hand on the throttle.  The latter is a bit of a problem really as the throttle is just a wee bit loose and at the moment is a bit like a �dead man�s handle� on a train, which it shouldn�t be!  We need to get this looked at when we get back to Whilton, which isn�t far away now.  Anyway, it means that Clive constantly has to hold the throttle forward so he can�t actually sit down.  However, if he has a footstool it means he can perch on the seat with the stool to support him and hopefully he will be a bit more comfortable.  We are going to try it out today � we will report back!   As mentioned before, we see quite a lot of birdlife on the canal, including robins.  We saw loads of them yesterday, just about every lock had its own resident robin.  It was interesting to watch one of them whilst I was filling the lock, it was flying right down inside the entrance to the lock pecking stuff of the walls, amazing.  It settled down quite close to me, it was lovely.  Also whilst sitting in a lock waiting for it to fill up Clive noticed a kestrel and managed to get a couple of photos of it whilst it was hovering overhead.   By the time we got back to the boat after our shopping expedition it was getting quite late but we didn�t really want to moor up for the night right in the middle of town so we set off again and cruised on for another half hour.  By this time the moon was out and we really needed to get moored up quickly � at this time of year night falls with a thud!  We soon came out into the countryside again and by this time the light was just magical, at twilight at the end of a sunny day, especially when it is cold, the light has a really luminous quality.  I have tried to capture it but the photos don�t really do it justice.  The trees looked wonderful silhouetted against the sky and the water looked amazing too.  Anyway we found a lovely spot and moored up, not a moment too soon it was very chilly by this time, it was getting on for 4.30pm and we usually like to be settled around 3.30pm!  Still it didn�t take long for us to warm up once we were inside � we threw some of our purloined logs on the stove and within minutes it was roaring like a furnace!   I made a very posh dinner, with a starter!  We had large field mushrooms with garlic, cheese and tomato done under a slow grill for the starter and a rather yummy chicken casserole to follow.  I have found that I can produce some really fine meals in my little galley, considering it is about a quarter the size of my kitchen back in Cambridge � it may be small but its perfectly formed!  I love it!  (It�s a lot easier to keep clean and tidy too!!!)   Well that�s about it � I am sitting typing this blog on Wednesday morning, Clive is still in bed reading his book as again we are in no rush to go anywhere.  The weather forecast said it would be very cold this morning but would be bright and sunny in the afternoon.  It is just after 10.00am now and I can see blue sky and fluffy clouds drifting by.   About thirty elderly ramblers have just walked past the boat (we see a lot of these on the towpath), obviously from a local rambling club.   A flock of pheasants just landed in the field opposite the boat and a couple of swans drifted by a couple of minutes ago.  Life is good. I have a wonderful view from the window!   Once Clive is up and we have had breakfast we will be setting off on another leisurely cruise � I wonder where we will get to today?
