Well what can I say – apart from the fact that it is perishing cold and this boat is not going anywhere anytime soon!  However it is very, very pretty!

Winter Wonderland!

We are still alive, not two little frozen husks inside...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Well we have had a great few days since the last blog – 2010 has got off to a really good start for us. Heather and Les came to pick us up on New Year’s Eve in the afternoon around 3.30pm and took us back to their house. It was great to see them again. We were very glad to see that Heather was no longer resplendent inplaster cast as her badly fractured leg has now healed and she is back to fullstrength – it’s taken a lo...

December 30th - Kidsgrove

Posted by clivenmel on December 30, 2009 at 3:25 PM

Well Christmas is over for another year!

We finally made it to Huddersfield on December 23rd.  My brother Nick made it to our location on the second attempt, though it took quite a while as there was so much traffic.  I had kept in touch with him on his journey over and when we knew that he would be with us in about fifteen minutes we started to transport all our stuff from the boat, along the towpath to a stile over the fence where he could park his car.  We...

Bah Humbug!!!

Well things never go according to plan do they!  We are still aboard Lady Arwen on the frozen Macclesfield Canal! My brother Nick phoned me this morning and asked what the weather was like – beautiful said I, lovely blue skies, sunshine – why? You should be so lucky, he said, its blizzard conditions here – I’m setting off now and will be with you in about an hour hopefully!

So, we went into overdrive!...

This morning we took one look at the canal and realised the Christmas might have to be cancelled!  We checked the weather forecast and it was definitely gloomy as far as we are concerned.  The maximum temperature during the day was about 2 degrees, the overnight temperature -5!!  There is no way this canal is going to defrost in time for us to get to Church Minshull.  So we were feeling a bit down in the dumps.

When we had arrived at this mooring followin...

Ok did anybody notice it got a bit cold last night?  Well the flipping canal was frozen this morning wasn't it so all our plans are now on hold till the damn thing thaws out, which could take a couple of days!!  We have approximately sixteen hours of cruising to do, including quite a number of locks, in order to reach Church Minshull Marina.  Under normal circumstances we would say that would be three big days or four reasonable days.  Judging by the weather forecast we co...

It’s been an interesting day!

The alarm went off at 7.45am again, I hit the snooze button twice then we went back to sleep! We finally woke up at 8.50 – oh dear! We had a cuppa and a bowl of cereal then Clive got ready to set off.  I joined him up on deck when I had washed up the breakfast dishes.  It was a beautiful morning, such a contrast to yesterday.  There was wall to wall blue sky and sunshine, amazing!  Mind you, it was chil...

Saturday Dec 12th – Wood Lanes

Terry finally arrived on Saturday morning after a three hour journey from Atherstone!  He had brought all the poles with him to convert into the frame for the pramhood.  He set to and drilled lots of holes then fitted the poles onto the stern, then he left!  I was really surprised he was so quick, I never even got to speak to him.  I was going to make him a cup of tea but he didn’t stop long enough.  Still ...

Dec 7th 09 - Wood Lanes

Well the only thing I have to report on today is the fact that we thoroughly enjoyed Mark and Zabrina’s wonderful wedding weekend!

My sister Thelma arrived on Friday armed to the teeth with suitcase, umpteen bags, several pairs of shoes and boots and last but definitely not least – a full length mirror! See, she thinks of everything!

We had a quick lunch – left overs from the last night’s stew and dumplings – then...

Monday November 30th - Wood Lanes

Posted by clivenmel on November 30, 2009 at 12:45 PM

Hello, we’re still here!

I haven’t been blogging lately because really there hasn’t been a lot to report.  We have had a week of ups and downs weatherwise, mainly high winds bumping us up against the bank and lots and lots of rain!  It has also turned quite nippy of late!

We have been pootling up and down the Macc, basically killing time.  The great excitement of the week was a trip to the hairdressers in High Lane for me!...
